Alex Smith to visit Dolphins on Sunday

The Miami Dolphins are still looking for their QB upgrade over Matt Moore. According to ESPN, the Dolphins are expanding their search on Sunday by bringing in 49ers free-agent QB, Alex Smith. Smith’s visit with the Dolphins comes just a day after the team had Matt Flynn in for a visit.

With all of the hoopla surrounding Peyton Manning’s decision, it appears Alex Smith is open to looking at other options. The 49ers have flirted with Manning and now risk losing their starting QB. Earlier this offseason, the 49ers offered Smith a 3 year contract worth about $24 mil. Then, they jumped into the Manning race and are now one of the 3 finalists.

Bringing Smith in for a visit could simply be a leverage play by the Dolphins. It’s been reported that the Dolphins are looking to sign Flynn to a team friendly deal. Maybe those negotiations yesterday didn’t go very far, so the Dolphins are leveraging Flynn by bringing in Smith? Or, maybe the Dolphins actually have an interest in Smith?

Alex Smith was the number one overall pick in the 2005 draft. He struggled early in his career and has a 58% career completion percentage. However, last year, Smith blossomed. Smith threw for 17 TDs and just 5 INTs, leading the 49ers to the NFC Championship game. Maybe Joe Philbin sees something in Smith that makes him think he can be a better starter for the Dolphins than Flynn? Or maybe this is just a meeting that will cause Flynn to accept a lower offer from the Dolphins. We should know more later today…..

Smith is not a up grade over Matt Moore. Smith did blossom last year but it was a system that played to his talent. Can he be a good player in Philibins west coast system?
I would Try to sign Flynn or draft a young gun.Flynn is my first choice so we can use our draft picks on other needs.Let Flynn and Moore fight it out to be the starter.

Alex Smith is not the option!!! He’s way overrated and was never worth the #1pick in 05′. I’ll be happy with Matt Moore over them both. If Flynn takes a two year contract that doesn’t hurt us too bad then I guess Flynn is it. He can then battle it out with Moore for the starting job. If we don’t get Flynn, don’t use our pick on Tannenhill and get our right tackle or our DE and draft Weeden in the 2nd. Rebuild the team the right way.

You know, its REALLY hard to remain a Dolphin fan when the team continues to make stupid move after stupid move. The front office is treating the team like they need to be in rebuilding mode when, in reality, an upgrade at QB and a couple of defensive upgrades would put the fins in playoff contention. The fact that they’ve now blown opportunities at Manning, Flynn, AND RGIII shows that ownership and management haven’t got a clue. I’ve been a Dolphins fan since Marino’s rookie year but with the new “celebrity” part ownership, a front office (GM specifically) that never seems to “get” it, and the resulting years of mediocrity, have me considering doing what I NEVER dreamed doing. Jumping ship to a different team. After all, it’s clearly sinking fast.
