Dion Jordan returns to practice for Dolphins & other Dolphins notes

The Miami Dolphins have had their share of injuries this preseason.  Well today, the Dolphins welcomed back their 1st round draft pick, Dion Jordan.  Jordan suffered a setback when he reinjured his shoulder during the Dolphins second preseason game (vs. Jaguars).  Jordan, you will remember, had surgery earlier this year to repair a torn labrum.  Jordan practiced for about 2 weeks and participated in the Dolphins first 2 preseason games, before reinjuring his shoulder.

The Dolphins traded up to get Jordan, hoping that he would grow into a dominant defensive end compliment to Cameron Wake.  the results have been good when Jordan has been able to practice.  However, his school schedule and injuries have limited him to about 2 full weeks of training camp practices.  That’s simply not enough for him to be fully up to speed both in the defensive scheme and in on-the-field awareness.

Since the media is only allowed to watch the first 15 minutes of practice, it is unknown how much Jordan was able to practice.  However, he was in full pads and was working during the time the media could see.   Obviously, this is a good sign.  BUT, we can only hope that Jordan is actually healthy this time.  The real milestone is for Jordan to be ready on September 8th for the season opener.  That is still 12 days away, so there is still time for him to recover further.

I would HOPE the Dolphins are being cautious with him this time.  If he’s hurt, he shouldn’t be practicing, it’s as simple as that.  I’d rather him sit out the first 1 or even 2 games of the season, so that he is fully healthy for the rest of the season.  Bringing him back too quickly could result in him reinjuring the shoulder again, setting him back even further, perhaps even derailing his rookie season.

The Dolphins don’t address players’ injuries, so Joe Philbin shed zero light on the subject today.  He also wouldn’t say how long the starters would play, if at all, against the Saints on Thursday night.  Since he just returned to practice today, I HIGHLY doubt that we will see Jordan on the field Thursday night.  Again, the goal is to get him healthy and ready for opening day against the Browns.  (continued on page 2, CLICK HERE)
