On Tuesday, the Miami Dolphins announced the members of the 2013 ‘Leadership Council’. I’m sorry, but this is the same thing as naming captains. No, these players won’t necessarily be out on the field calling the coin flip, but they are the captains of the team. Joe Philbin, you see, chooses new captains each week based on play from the previous week and practice. It’s an honor that he doesn’t want to put on just a few players for the entire season.
However, Philbin does name his Leadership Council. You remember the council last year from Hard Knocks, right? Jake Long, Karlos Dansby, Reggie Bush, and Davone Bess…..that’s right, all of them are now gone. So Philbin needed to name a new council for this season. This year the Leadership Council will be Ryan Tannehill, Cameron Wake, Richie Incognito, Dannell Ellerbe, Paul Soliai, and Mike Pouncey.
The interesting name there, to me at least, is Ellerbe. All of the rest of the captains have been with the team for at least a full year. Ellerbe, you’ll remember, was on the Super Bowl Champion Ravens last season, so his veteran leadership is surely the reason for his inclusion. Ellerbe has been to the top of the mountain and knows what it takes to produce a championship.
The reasoning behind this council is for the players to have a voice with the coaches. It’s not a union, but these captains act as the intermediary between the players in the trenches and the coaching staff. Joe Philbin wants these players to take charge in the locker room and be his voice when he’s not around. You can imagine Richie Incognito yelling at Dion Jordan “Hey Rook, pick up that gum wrapper!”.
Anyway, I think the choices were good ones. You have the quarterback and two of his linemen…..then you have the best player on the team, his fellow lineman, and a Super Bowl Champion starting linebacker. Hopefully this council does a better job than the council last year. And hopefully some of these guys stick around to see the 2014 season!
