Dolphins COULD Gain (Luck) if Colts Lose #1 Pick

It has amazed me how so many Miami Dolphins fans are openly rooting for teams in other cities this season.  I include myself as one of those Dolphins fans.  Last night the Dolphins didn’t play, but their future success could have hinged on the Texans/Colts game.  Sadly, I had nothing better to do than to watch the game and root like crazy for the Colts to pull out a miracle, second straight win.  Why am I suddenly a Colts fan?  Simply, if the Colts are knocked out of the #1 draft spot, the possibilities arise for the Dolphins to trade up to get Andrew Luck.

The Colts Owner, Jim Irsay, has said a number of times that he would not shy away from selecting Andrew Luck, even with Peyton Manning on their roster.  Who knows the inner workings of the Colts, but many expect the Colts to select Luck if they have the #1 pick.  The question then becomes what to do with Peyton Manning.  I don’t think they’ll both be on the Colts roster in 2012.

According to the NFL Network, if the Colts, Rams, and Vikings all end up with the same record (2-14), the Colts would still own the #1 pick.  The Rams currently sit at 2-12, but have the Steelers and 49ers remaining on their schedule.  The Vikings (2-12) have the Redskins and Bears left on their schedule.  The Colts (2-13) finish out the season against the Jaguars.  It’s likely that the Rams will end up 2-14….so if the Colts were to win against the Jags, the Rams would have the #1 pick.

The Rams getting the #1 pick would probably be the dream scenario for many Dolphins fans.  Why?  Because the Rams just paid a boatload of money to Sam Bradford after taking him #1 overall in the 2010 draft.  What they need are more picks to build around Bradford….enter the Dolphins or any other team that has the guts to trade up to get Andrew Luck.  The asking price for the #1 pick and Luck would likely cost the Dolphins a bevy of draft picks and possibly a Pro-Bowl caliber player or 2.  Perhaps 2 first round picks and Jake Long?  Perhaps 3 first round picks and Davone Bess?  Something along those lines.  What would you be willing to give up for him?

Outside of Luck, there is still the possibility that Robert Griffin III declares for the draft.  He and Luck are the only 2 QBs worthy of a top 10 (and possibly a 1st round) pick.  To get Griffin, the Dolphins could also look to trade up to the #2 or #3 spot to ensure they get him.  Will they make that move?   Will they finally be aggressive to get the QB they want and need?  The options are dwindling, but those questions can only be answered by one man….Jeff Ireland.

I would give up this years number 1 and Bush or Marshall or both. Marshall good ol’ stone hands has not been what miami needs in a elite wr and Bush, well just is not the back that Thomas is going to be, plus there are a lot of FA backs every year. Other then that if Jeff is still in control we will end up with Moore starting and Henne as back up in 2012

  • will

No,don’t give up nothing. Moore is looking good. With a good off season. Next year we will be a lot better.

I WOULD KEEP MATT MOORE AND BUILD OUR D …MATT DID A GREAT JOB COMING OF THE BENCH IN THE SEASON AFTER HENNE COULD NOT EVEN GET US A WIN MATT IS NOT THE BEST BUT HE DOES SHOW US HE CAN DO IT

  • jeff

i think going after luck is a mistake MOORE is doing a hell of a good job and will only get better. He is a heck of alot better than henne and you just don’t know what your getting with luck and giving up our picks and veteran players big big mistake to do that. build up our defence and give him some more options to go to…..

Moore has done a Great job filling in after Henne went down. In fact i dont think we would have started to turn thinks around if not for him. But lets not forget that we’ve been without an elite QB for OVER A DECADE!!!!! We need to pull the trigger if Luck becomes availible. Let him compete with Moore. It wouldnt kill me either to see Marshall in a Rams jersey, he’s one more knife fight away with his wife to being behind bars anyway. Get rid of him, maybe some draft picks and take a chance on Luck! Then go after D.Jackson. I here he most likely wont stick around in Phily

I believe we turned the corner with Matt and should spend the draft picks on O-Line to protect him and a good tight end and a GOOD running back to go with Bush, and get rid of Thomas- he is a BUST. I believe Mat Moore could be another Griese for us, we don’t have to have another Marino to win

Hold on guys! First let’s not forget that Henne throw for 426 yards against the Patriots when the season started. For several weeks our D was not even close to where they are now. Brandon has dropped more balls then ever in the first half of the season. Don’t blame all on Henne, and lift up Moore to high. He (Moore) is not bad but not a starter who can come from behind and turn a game around, but that’s what we need.

With that said let me tell you what I want to see in the off-season and drafts:

    1. Get a good offensive coach with leadership qualities and authority, but not Gruden.
    2. Give Jeff Ireland a chance to make up for his mistakes and to become a solid member of this team and organization by watching the draft and see what he does.
    3. Trade the first, second and third round picks for 2012, and 2013 to get Andrew Luck or RG3 as franchise QB.
    4. Keep Matt more and Chad Henne as back-ups
    5. Get a FA for Colombo at the T position.
    6. Get a great wide out as FA – thinking about DeSean Jackson
    7. Get some good pick for the secondary

With that said, I would not expect the Dolphins to be a SB contender for at least two seasons, and yet if they start Luck or RG3 right away with Moore as back-up and Henne as number 3 they should be able to make the play-offs or at least will have a much better record on 2012. For 2013 they should be a great team and definitely play-off material. In 2014, after Luck or RG3 have been banged up and used to the roughness of the NFL, now I can see the Dolphins as SB contender.

A major thing is that we do not let Mike Nolan go, the defense looks great and is improving.
