It has amazed me how so many Miami Dolphins fans are openly rooting for teams in other cities this season. I include myself as one of those Dolphins fans. Last night the Dolphins didn’t play, but their future success could have hinged on the Texans/Colts game. Sadly, I had nothing better to do than to watch the game and root like crazy for the Colts to pull out a miracle, second straight win. Why am I suddenly a Colts fan? Simply, if the Colts are knocked out of the #1 draft spot, the possibilities arise for the Dolphins to trade up to get Andrew Luck.
The Colts Owner, Jim Irsay, has said a number of times that he would not shy away from selecting Andrew Luck, even with Peyton Manning on their roster. Who knows the inner workings of the Colts, but many expect the Colts to select Luck if they have the #1 pick. The question then becomes what to do with Peyton Manning. I don’t think they’ll both be on the Colts roster in 2012.
According to the NFL Network, if the Colts, Rams, and Vikings all end up with the same record (2-14), the Colts would still own the #1 pick. The Rams currently sit at 2-12, but have the Steelers and 49ers remaining on their schedule. The Vikings (2-12) have the Redskins and Bears left on their schedule. The Colts (2-13) finish out the season against the Jaguars. It’s likely that the Rams will end up 2-14….so if the Colts were to win against the Jags, the Rams would have the #1 pick.
The Rams getting the #1 pick would probably be the dream scenario for many Dolphins fans. Why? Because the Rams just paid a boatload of money to Sam Bradford after taking him #1 overall in the 2010 draft. What they need are more picks to build around Bradford….enter the Dolphins or any other team that has the guts to trade up to get Andrew Luck. The asking price for the #1 pick and Luck would likely cost the Dolphins a bevy of draft picks and possibly a Pro-Bowl caliber player or 2. Perhaps 2 first round picks and Jake Long? Perhaps 3 first round picks and Davone Bess? Something along those lines. What would you be willing to give up for him?
