Dolphins Division: Dolphins hope to stay alive versus Patriots

The Miami Dolphins kept their slim playoff hopes alive with a win on Sunday.  Now, after losing winnable games against the Titans and Bills, the Dolphins face an uphill climb to stay relevant in playoff talk.  That won’t be easy, considering the Dolphins still have to play the 49ers and the Patriots twice.  It all starts on Sunday, with the Patriots coming to town, the Dolphins should be treating this as a playoff game.

Realistically, the Dolphins will probably need to go 4-1 to finish at 9-7, to have a shot at making the playoffs.  Why?  Because the Steelers and Bengals are already a game up for the 6th wild card spot.  Just to tie one of those 2 teams, the Dolphins would need help and would need them to go 3-2.  There are scenarios for the Dolphins to make the playoffs at 8-8, but it’s too early to have a clear picture.  If you have time on your hands, check out the ESPN playoff machine.  If the Dolphins can pull off an upset against the Patriots, we can talk more seriously about the playoffs.  With a loss, the Dolphins would probably need to win out and get a lot of help.

New England Patriots (8-3 overall, 4-0 division)

The Patriots have a strangle-hold on the AFC East and can actually clinch the division with a win against the Dolphins on Sunday.  That’s right, the Patriots can clinch the division with 4 games to go if they win on Sunday.  Last week, the Patriots embarrassed the Jets on Thanksgiving, exposing the Jets for the jokes that they have become.  The Patriots offense looks unstoppable and they’ve scored over 100 points through the last 2 games.  This week, they bring their high-powered offense to Miami and will face a Dolphins team that will be playing for their playoff lives.  (cont’d on page 2, click below)

It will be a very long shot for the Dolphins to beat New England since they lack consistency, especially on the secondary. The only posible way to beat New England is to neutralize Tom Brady all game and keep him on the sidelines as much is possible. The running game for the Dolphins need to be at the best, otherwise, I don’t see a chance for victory. We know that New England’ running game will not be so much problem for Miami’ front. But if the Dolphins are unable to keep Brady down all game, we may see close to 50 points against this Dolphin secondary. Furthermore, the Dolphins have a very serious problem on special team and with New England there no room for that. It will be a long shot and if they can get it done against new England maybe they can dream about play-offs.

I think the screen, which has victimized us so much through the years, needs to be effectively defended against. Look out for Welker breaking it after catching a short sideline pass. I’m afraiid of NE’s running game, because it’s been those teams not known for running the ball that much, that have given us the most problems on the ground lately. I do agree with Uri below in that we must attack Brady… I know, it’s suicidal, but we can’t depend on tight coverage even from Smith, so do let the dogs out if you would.
