Dolphins Draft strategy will involve a QB, but which one?
The Miami Dolphins are poised to have a very big offseason and should completely transform their roster over the next 3 months. That’s right, in just 3 months, the Miami Dolphins will have spent a bunch of money in free agency and will have used their war chest of draft picks (in one way or another).
The Dolphins roster will look drastically different in 3 months than it does today (and certainly different than it looked at the end of their 5-11 season). We can only guess how this offseason will go. What positions will the Dolphins focus on in free agency? Will they spend big? Will they look for young, 2nd-tier type players? Will they use all 3 1st-round draft picks? And most importantly, WHAT QUARTERBACK WILL THEY SELECT?!?!?

Well, the picture above should give you a hint as to whom I think the Dolphins will ultimately end up with! However, as much as Dolphins fans are expecting the team to end up with Tua, that might not be what happens. We should all prepare for that possibility. First, we all have to see how Tua’s hip injury progresses and where he’s at (health-wise) in April. Second, we don’t even know for sure that the Dolphins covet Tua as their top rated QB in this year’s draft.
Do I think the Dolphins select a QB in the 1st round of the 2020 NFL Draft? Absolutely. However, I have no idea (nor does anyone outside of the Dolphins organization) which QB they want to build the franchise around.
Adam Schefter today said he doesn’t think the Bengals are trading their #1 overall pick and will select Joe Burrow.
So let’s assume that Burrow is off the board. If the Bengals want him, they are empowered to have him with the #1 pick. After that, it’ll depend who the Dolphins covet most and what the cost will be to move into position to draft him. They may have to trade up to #2 or #3 to select the QB they want. And if the leaders on this team believe that QB can be an elite, franchise changing QB, do it……and don’t think twice.
We’ll all debate whether Tua is the guy or maybe Justin Herbert or Jordan Love. Is Tua too injury prone? Does Herbert have the pocket presence and personality to be ‘the guy’? Can Jordan Love ever reach the potential he’s shown? Everyone has an opinion. The only opinions that matter are those who’s jobs will depend on making the right pick.
Personally, I think Tua (if medicals check out) should be the guy. He has ‘it’ and you can’t teach ‘it’. The comparison I’ve heard from a few different people, is that Tua could be a left handed Drew Brees. Sign. Me. Up.
However, the Dolphins will surely have a backup plan IF they don’t want to pay the steep price to move up OR if they are uncomfortable with the medicals. I’m not a fan of Herbert, but we know the Dolphins have done their due diligence on him. IF the Dolphins can’t land Tua, my second option would be Jordan Love. He’s a bigger risk, but his potential upside is huge. Could he be similar to Patrick Mahomes? If Tua’s not an option, I’d roll the dice on Love.
Thankfully, we have 3 long months to deal with smokescreens, lies, and misinformation about who the Dolphins and other team’s covet. So unless the Dolphins trade up to #1 and make it known who they’re drafting, we’ll all be opining about who the Dolphins covet. And I’m here for the chaos!
