Dolphins sign Lance Louis, is Brent Grimes next?

The Miami Dolphins added another free agent yesterday, as the team officially signed offensive guard, Lance Louis to a 1 year contract.  Louis is still recovering from a torn ACL he suffered in November, but is expected to be healthy again by training camp.  The Dolphins have not confirmed what their plans are for Louis, but it’s widely expected that he will compete with John Jerry for the starting right guard position.

Jerry started all 16 games for the Dolphins in 2012, but is not an ideal fit for the zone blocking scheme the Dolphins run.  Jerry is more of a power lineman, whereas the newly signed Louis is more of an athletic lineman.  Last season, rated Louis as the 47th best offensive guard in the NFL.  Meanwhile, Jerry was ranked as the 49th best offensive guard.  Doesn’t seem like a major upgrade.  However, if Louis can return to health by camp, I believe he’ll beat out Jerry for the starting spot.  Again, he fits the zone blocking scheme much better than John Jerry.

The Dolphins want their linemen to be able to move, pull, and get to the second level of the defense.  While Jerry is a huge man, he’s not as athletically gifted as Louis.  Utilizing Louis in a zone blocking scheme should allow him to flourish.  He’s only 27 years old and has not yet hit his prime.  Meanwhile, Jerry reported to camp last year at 390 lbs, which did not sit well with the Dolphins coaches.  This is definitely one camp battle to watch in August.  (cont’d on page 2, click here)
