After a busy first day of free agency, the Miami Dolphins are not slowing down. Adam Schefter reported this morning that free agent tight end, Dustin Keller will meet with the Dolphins today. Keller is believed to be the 2nd best tight end available in free agency. The Dolphins missed out on the best tight end available, when Jared Cook signed a 5 year deal worth $35 million with the Rams (with $19 million guaranateed!). I wanted Cook, but it’s fair to see that why Jeff Ireland decided not to spend that much money on him.
The Dolphins know Keller well, having played against him twice per season for the last 5 years. He missed 8 games in 2012 due to injuries, but when healthy he is exactly the type of upgrade at tight end that the Dolphins need. His is faster than Anthony Fasano and can create matchup problems for the defense. In 2011 he caught 65 passes for 815 yards and 5 TDs. For his career he averages 11.9 yards per catch, which is pretty good for the tight end position. Aaron Hernandez of the Patriots averages 11.2 yard per catch and Vernon Davis averages 12.6 yards per catch.
You also have to remember who has been throwing Keller the football…..Mark Sanchez. The Dolphins are interested in Keller, which shows that they realize the need to upgrade tight end. Even if they sign Keller, I would hope the Dolphins add a young tight end in the draft. I’m sorry, but I have very little confidence in Clay or Egnew at this point.
We’ll keep you posted on any new developments on this front as the day continues. Day 2 of free agency is off to a fast start, let’s hope Jeff Ireland continues to add pieces, filling the holes on the Dolphins roster and upgrading the talent!
