Former Dolphin Ricky Williams knows best
Martin upset the balance of the workplace and created all types of negative emotions for his teammates, coaches and organization with his actions.
Ricky believes that this is a “really a great example of the kid that is ‘getting bullied’ fighting back in his own way,” because “it takes some awareness and some planning and some orchestration to actually save those (texts) and record those (voicemails).”
Ultimately, he has compassion for both players, “I think they’re both victims. I think the truth is never going to come out. One guy has a paid vacation. And one guy has a vacation that’s not paid right now.”
I really appreciate Ricky Williams for his honest and thought provoking insight into the situation, it has helped me draw some conclusions.
Obviously, Richie Incognito used language that does not belong in any setting and deserves his suspension, but it is hard to justify a second year player who is handed the left tackle position on an NFL team not showing up to OTAs.
Richie Incognito should be taken off of the leadership council, because while he is passionate about football, he does not have a clue about where the line is.
Jonathan Martin has made a solid contribution towards the national debate on bullying and racism, but he has no clue about what it takes to become the All-Pro left tackle the Dolphins drafted him to be.
I sincerely believe that a little bit of time off is good for both players to develop a seed of change that will help them mature as football players and human beings. Both are culprits and victims of an unhealthy work environment and both have what it takes to right the wrongs of the past. I hope that their paid and unpaid vacations are over soon and they can help the team come together in the face of adversity.
