Is a 1st round bye realistic for the Dolphins?
These are all quality victories when you consider what the Chargers just did and how the Browns were just one onside kick away from taking down New England.
The Dolphins have quietly won 4 of the last 6 games as they prepare to host a wounded New England team who will not have All World tight end Rob Gronkowski at their disposal for the rest of the year. They know they had them up against the ropes on their turf with a commanding first half and a 17-3 lead and they, in a Dennis Green voice “Let ’em off the hook!”.
The stage has been set and it is clear that the psychological advantage should be on Miami’s side. The stadium should be packed and not only that, the parking lot should be packed with people who could not get in but decided they should be a part of this moment.
Lost among all of the playoff fever that is sweeping Miami is that the #2 seed in the AFC could very well fall into Miami’s grasp with a strong finish and a little bit of luck.
Let’s consider a scenario where Miami and Baltimore both beat New England at home.
Were you aware that the Dolphins would only need Cincinnati to lose at Pittsburgh this weekend to create a scenario where a 10 win Dolphins team would only need Indianapolis to lose at Kansas City and Cincinnati to lose to Baltimore in order to put the Patriots in a win or go home situation in the final week?
If the Bills could do to New England what they did to Miami, the Dolphins would have earned the #2 seed in the AFC.
At this point, all the Dolphins can do is when their games and hope for the best, but who would have thought that a first round bye was still a realistic possibility. Stranger things have happened, just in the past week.
If Miami and Baltimore win out, the Dolphins would only need a Cincinnati loss at Pittsburgh and an Indianapolis loss at Kansas City to put New England on the ropes against Buffalo.
If Buffalo avenged their early season nail biter against the Pats, the Dolphins would earn the AFC East, #2 seed, a bye week and at least one home game.
