Latest news on Jairus Byrd, Branden Albert and the Dolphins
As for the free agents the Dolphins are looking at, we knew that they brought in Louis Delmas (Lions) for a visit last week. But, surprisingly, it seems the Dolphins have a real interest in Jairus Byrd (Bills):
“Byrd is Around The League‘s No. 1 free agent in our top 101 list. Players with his playmaking ability rarely hit the open market, and the 27-year-old is poised to make top dollar when free agency opens Tuesday.”
I would LOVE to see the Dolphins somehow find a way to sign Jairus Byrd. He’s only 27 and he’s in the prime of his career. Teaming him with Reshad Jones and Brent Grimes in the secondary would be awesome. Taking him from the Bills (who beat the Dolphins twice last year, by the way) would be icing on the cake.
[UPDATE 2pm EST]: Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald just tweeted “Jairus Byred = sticker shock”…So it’s possible the Dolphins weren’t expecting him to demand a large contract? I guess so, but that’s surprising considering he’s one of the top free agents on the market.
None of this can become official until 4pm EST on Tuesday, when the 2014 NFL league year officially starts. But, the rumors are flying hot and heavy right now. It seems at least, that the Dolphins are going to be aggressive in free agency.
The Dolphins have plenty of holes to fill on the offensive line and, if Soliai and Starks both leave, along the defensive line. Signing Albert and Byrd would be a big step in remaking the Dolphins team. Now, I while I like both of those names, I will reserve excitement until 2 things happen: 1. The Dolphins actually sign those players and 2. The Dolphins coaching staff actually uses those players correctly (see: Mike Wallace in 2013).
