In the weeks (and months) leading up to the NFL Draft, Dolphins fans clamored for the Dolphins to select a QB early in the draft. The most popular young QB that Dolphins fans wanted to see in Miami was Ryan Mallett from Arkansas. When the Draft rolled around, Mallett’s stock had reportedly fallen quite a bit. Some ‘experts’ predicted he would fall to the 2nd or 3rd round because of his snail like athleticism and off the field issues. The Dolphins chose not to take a QB in the 1st round, instead taking Mike Pouncey, Center from Florida. In the second round, the Dolphins did not hold a selection. When news broke that the Dolphins had traded up into the 2nd round (giving up 3rd, 5th, and 7th rd picks), many Dolphins fans thought the Dolphins were moving up to select Ryan Mallett. Instead, the Dolphins chose Daniel Thomas, Running Back from Kansas State. Mallett ended up lasting until the 3rd round, when the New England Patriots selected him.
Apparently, Ryan Mallett thought, like many Dolphins fans, that the Dolphins were moving up to select him. In fact, he is reportedly a little upset that the Dolphins didn’t take him. According to his father, “They took another guy. ‘Payback’. He remembers it”. I can understand being upset and not going to a team where you have a chance to actually PLAY football. But please forgive the Dolphins if they aren’t shaking in their spikes. By all accounts, Mallett is going to what could be the perfect situation. He has time to mature, grow, and learn the ways of the NFL behind Future Hall of Famer, Tom Brady. He has a good team around him and a legendary Head Coach……Okay, I’m done sweet talking the Patsies! A note to Ryan’s Dad, maybe if you had disciplined your son, he wouldn’t have fallen like a rock on draft day. Maybe he wouldn’t have had drug and alcohol issues on his draft card. Maybe you will realize soon that what’s (most likely) best for your son, is going to the Patriots.
As for the Dolphins, they have to worry about Tom Brady for the near future. And according to Brady, the next 10 years, because that’s how long he plans to play. The Dolphins, for their part, did express an interest in Mallett and even explored trading up into the 3rd round to take him. The Dolphins really shouldn’t have to worry about ‘Payback’ from Ryan Mallett anytime soon…..unless he’s going to start tripping people on the sidelines and change his name to Sal Alosi!
