Tomorrow night the Miami Dolphins will take the field at Sun Life Stadium to face off in their third preseason matchup. The Atlanta Falcons come to town also with 2 losses this preseason. Friday marks the second consecutive week in a row Ryan Tannehill will be in command of the Dolphins offense. For the first time this session the Dolphins will be executing a “Game Plan” for the Falcons game. With Tannehill staying after hours studying up on the Falcons defense this week, I have to believe that he knows what will be expected of him. Let’s not forget Mike Nolan spent 2 years with the Dolphins recently as their defensive coordinator, if any team has the inside track on Nolan and the Falcons defense it’s Miami. I look for the Dolphins young WR core to continue to make plays tomorrow night, time is running thin for the 10-12 trying to make the final cuts. Expect the Dolphins to finally open up the running game, this will be key in creating options to get Tannehill some solid looks through the air. The first 2 preseason showings by the offense have clearly favored the passing game, much to do with the evaluation of the QB and WR position battles. With the QB battle decided, only the WR’s are left, this should reduce some of the number of passes Friday.
The Dolphins first team defense will get their fill of assignments, trying to contain Matt Ryan through the air, and Michael Turner on the ground. Julio Jones and Roddy White will give our secondary a much needed test. Expect to see Ryan go to the air early, as I believe our secondary is a big hole in the Dolphins defense at this point. Vontae Davis and Sean Smith have yet to put together an impressive series this pre-season. Richard Marshall has been battling for Vontae’s spot all camp, lets see if VD can put together a legit performance against a solid group of receivers, and lock up his starting spot. With Dasnby sidelined for maybe the rest of the preseason look for Trusnik and Misi (possibly Burnett) to take most of the first team reps at LB, also Cam Wake should be back in action. Still plenty of unknowns going into Friday night, hopefully after this game the bigger picture will seem a little clearer, and give the Dolphins something to build upon heading into the last preseason game.
