Michael Bennett visiting Dolphins today, while Sean Smith is headed to Chiefs

The Miami Dolphins are still awaiting news on Jake Long and are still said to be hosting Dustin Keller in Davie, FL.  However, news may be picking up soon.  This afternoon, @ProFootballTalk  tweeted that the Dolphins are hosting a visit with free agent defensive end, Michael Bennett.  Bennett is thought by some to be the best available ‘young pass rusher’ available on the market.  Bennett has been with the Tampa Bay Bucs for the last 4 years and last year he registered 9 sacks from the left defensive edge position.

The left defensive edge position could be important.  Because that’s also the position that Cameron Wake plays.  According to @ckparrot, statistics show that Wake is about half as effective from right defensive end than from the left side.  So, could the Dolphins be considering signing Bennett to play the right side?  We don’t know at this point.  For a further look at Bennett, check out this article from Rotoworld.

Remember though, the right defensive end goes up against the offense’s left tackle, who is usually their best offensive lineman.  Having said (written) all of that, I still think Bennett would be a good signing for the Dolphins.  If he can come close to replicating his success in Tampa, the Dolphins would finally have a good compliment to Cameron Wake.  Bennett, like Wake, is also stout against the run.  We’ll keep you posted on this news as soon as we hear more.

On a completely unrelated subject, we learned on Thursday that the Dolphins will not be welcoming back Sean Smith.  Smith agreed to a 3 year deal worth $18 million with the Kansas City Chiefs.  So long Sean, best of luck in Kansas City!  If you’re a regular reader of this blog, you know that I’m not too heartbroken about Smith leaving.  The key will be to figure out who the Dolphins are going to replace him with.
