Monday Dolphins GM update: Dolphins interview 5 candidates
Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald has heard that the leading candidates are Brian Gaine and Ray Farmer. Late last week, Armando said that Ray Farmer is the frontrunner. Farmer is a very interesting name because he is very highly regarded by multiple NFL teams. He’s a ‘rising star’ according to people in the Browns organization….I wonder if he suggested trading Trent Richardson for a 1st round pick? That move looks like a steal by the Browns at this point when immediately after the trade, everyone said the Colts got the best of the deal.
As I said on Friday, I don’t expect this search to linger on. I expect the Dolphins to finish up interviews this week, with the second round coming quickly thereafter. I would think the Dolphins would want to have their new GM in place by the start of senior bowl practices on January 20th. Again, they need to find the right person and that person needs to fully embrace the responsibilities that come with the position.
As we told you last week, the Dolphins GM will not have the ability to hire/fire the head coach and he will be reporting directly to Stephen Ross. The new GM will be responsible for the draft, free agency, and the final 53 man roster. Having somewhat limited power, the big question is whether or not the Dolphins will be able to attract the person they feel can do the job best.
The Dolphins also have an ongoing search for their open Offensive Coordinator position. The leading candidates seem to be Kyle Shanahan, Gary Kubiak, and Ben McAdoo. Actually, as it turns out, the Dolphins haven’t interviewed McAdoo yet. However, I wouldn’t read too much into that. I say that because McAdoo and Joe Philbin know each other very well. So, even though he hasn’t interviewed yet, things could progress quickly. We’ll keep you posted as soon as we get more news on both searches!
