It’s a new Miami Dolphins season and PhinNation’s pitiful picks are back! Last year we finished right around .500, which was….well, pitiful! This year, we’re getting started a week late for our full 4 pick format, but we are 1-0. As difficult as it was, we picked the Texans last week -12.5 to beat the Dolphins. This week, we think the Dolphins bounce back and get their act together against the Raiders. Here are our picks for the Dolphins win and the rest of the pitiful picks:
Baltimore Ravens +3 over Philadelphia Eagles
The Ravens looked great on Monday night….the Eagles looked terrible on Sunday. However, in this Sunday’s matchup, the Ravens are GETTING 3 points. I hate when lines look this off, but it’s too good to ignore. I think the Eagles will play a lot better than they did in week 1. BUT, I still think the Ravens and 3 points will get the job done. The Eagles have DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin both nursing injuries. Both are expected to play, but the Eagles success will come down to how well Michael Vick plays. I think the Ravens no-huddle offense will keep the game up-tempo and their defense will cause a couple of turnovers to come away with a close win.
Houston Texans -7 over Jacksonville Jaguars
The Dolphins hung around with the Texans for almost an entire half. But then the Texans defense showed up and the offense made the Dolphins pay for their turnovers. The Texans are one of the top 3 teams in the AFC (Ravens/Patriots) and should win this game in Jacksonville by at least 10 points. If the Texans defense continues to create turnovers, while the offense capitalizes on them, this game could get out of hand in a hurry. I don’t like giving up 7 points on the road, but I think the Texans are a lot more talented than the Jags.
Detroit Lions +7 over San Fransisco 49ers
This is our upset pick of the week. Seeming everyone is jumping on the 49er bandwagon after their impressive week 1 performance against the Packers. The Lions, by contrast, struggled last week, particularly Matthew Stafford. I think the Lions rebound and show the potential they exhibited last year. It’s a big game and I expect Calvin Johnson to shine. I think the Lions defense can do enough to hold Alex Smith and the 49er offense under 20 points. They’ll have to because the 49er defense isn’t going to allow this game to get into a shootout.
Miami Dolphins +2 over Oakland Raiders
I’ve been saying this all week, but I think the Raiders are made to order this week for the Dolphins. Oakland played on Monday Night Football, so they’re on a short work week….They’re also traveling all the way across the country to play a 1 o’clock game…..The Dolphins are finally playing a home 1 o’clock game so the Miami heat and humidity should play to their advantage in their home opener. I expect Reggie Bush to pick up where he left off in the 1st half against the Texans and Lamar Miller, getting his first action as a Pro, might break a long run. A strong Dolphins running game will only help Ryan Tannehill in his second Pro start. Helping Tannehill as well will be some injuries for the Raiders at linebacker and cornerback.
The Dolphins defense was put behind the 8 ball a number of times because of the 4 turnovers by the Dolphins offense. However, they played particularly well in the first half and I expect them to win in the trenches against the Raiders. In their last few meetings, the Dolphins have done well against the Raiders and I expect that to continue. Joe Philbin will get his first win as a head coach and Ryan Tannehill will get his first win as a starting QB in the NFL. Here’s hoping!!!
