Ryan Tannehill is ‘The Answer’ for the Dolphins
It might also be the case if Caleb Sturgis makes the kicks he is capable of making. It is hard to be upset at a kicker for not making 50+ yard field goals, but he had the distance in both his misses. In fact, maybe the Dolphins should have let Sturgis come out for a 73 yard game winning field goal. We have video evidence that he can make it from 72 yards while still getting the ball up:
There could be more designed plays for tight ends, because even though Charles Clay is on pace for a franchise record season for a Dolphins tight end, his numbers are ballooned by the fact that he is the only tight end being targeted regularly. The team actually has a couple of extra weapons with experience at the position. The first is offensive tackle Will Yeatman, who could line up next to one of the tackles to provide extra blocking and occasionally catch the defense by surprise for a short reception. The second is defensive end Dion Jordan, who would be unstoppable. He has to be in the end zone for hail mary situations at the very least.
Also, the running backs should be more involved in the passing game. The screen pass is not the only way to get the running back involved. The shovel pass is a low risk play that can lead to a huge gain or at least give pause to the opposition’s pass rush. Also, sending a back into the flat gives the quarterback a safety valve and another touch to one of the team’s playmakers. Sending the back out in motion can create an easily exploitable mismatch too.
The three game losing streak heading into Foxboro makes the 3-3 record feel a bit “glass half empty”, but the quarterback play has been “glass half full”. He has proven that he is capable of making all of the throws and that he is mentally strong. He has kept his composure in spite of the sacks and the turnovers and given his team a chance to win 5 out of 6 games, including the past two weeks where he flashed his ability to rally the team from double digit deficits.
