The Dolphins need a new General Manager; I’ll apply!
Admitting a mistake is less costly in the long run than holding onto a player past his usefulness to the team. Contract situation and potential should be a secondary concern and we should never keep the wrong player in order to save face or to avoid dead money.
Tight end is a position that must be emphasized.
The in house upgrade is Dion Jordan, who can split time between offense and defense until he becomes so dominant on one side of the field that he earns a full time spot. Physically, he can do a lot of the things that make Graham and Gronkowski special and played the position early in his career at Oregon.
Dustin Keller is a proven tight end in this league and should be re-signed.
The offensive line is not as terrible as it seems and I would reinvest in veteran tackles Tyson Clabo and Bryant McKinnie, who are both former Pro Bowlers. They are affordable stop gaps at this point. Richie Incognito, from a football standpoint, should also be retained.
Ryan Tannehill held onto the ball too long on about a half dozen plays per game. He does not have a natural feel for extending plays, but a good offensive coordinator and an upgrade at running back would instantly cut the sacks in half.
LeGarrette Blount or Ben Tate would help with short yardage and pass blocking situations. There may be a more cost effective solution, but this is not a place to cut corners or gamble. The team also needs to throw the ball to the running backs more in order to avoid a repeat of the sack disaster of 2013.
The fullback also needs to be featured more in the offense and Charles Clay is the right man for the job. He would be for Tannehill what Keith Byars was for Dan Marino.
On the defense line, Paul Soliai and Randy Starks are what is right with the defense and every effort should be made to keep both. The only exception would be if a 32 year old Vince Wilfork were willing to leave New England. He might be more affordable due to his age.
Brent Grimes and Dimitri Patterson were both excellent and should be retained. There is probably a temptation to cut or trade Dimitri because his $5.4 million is not guaranteed, but he played well when he was healthy and cornerback is not the place to pinch pennies either.
Cutting or trading Matt Moore would save $4 million. Trading or cutting Brandon Fields would free up another $3 million. These are valuable players, but if they were replaced by players making $1 million, a $5 million surplus has been created without having to cut one of our starting cornerbacks.
Thank you for your time Mr. Ross. Feel free to post a job offer on the message board.
