While Dolphins sit home, they could gain some ground in AFC East
The Miami Dolphins players were given 5 days off by Coach Philbin during the bye week. The players practiced on Tuesday, but won’t return to work until Monday. Philbin believed that giving the players off during the bye would allow them to recharge their batteries and allow the injured players to heal. I’m hoping that the offensive linemen did some Google searching to find out how to block opponents.
The Dolphins will likely enjoy this Sunday with their families, relaxing in front of the TV, much like many of us do every Sunday. BUT, the Dolphins (and Dolfans) would be wise to break out the pom poms and do some serious rooting. I know it’s only week 6 of the season, but it’s never too early to start looking ahead. So why not root like crazy against the rest of the possible AFC playoff contenders and the rest of the AFC East.
Last week, every team in the AFC East lost except for the Jets. The Jets moved into a tie with the Dolphins for second place in the division. The Patriots finally lost, which made the Dolphins loss to the Ravens a little less painful. Here’s a look at where things stand in the AFC East:
Patriots (4-1 overall, 2-0 division)
The Patriots lost to the Bengals and for the first time in a long time, Tom Brady failed to throw a touchdown pass. In fact, the Patriots failed to score a touchdown, losing 13-6 to the Bengals. This week, the Patriots return home and welcome in the 5-0 New Orleans Saints. The Patriots may be getting Rob Gronkowski back this week, which will be a big addition to Tom Brady’s arsenal. Thus far, Brady has been throwing to a lot of no-name receivers and Danny Amendola (when he hasn’t been hurt). Gronk’s return would be a welcomed addition to the Pats offense. I’ll be rooting (as should you) for the Saints to remain unbeaten and knock off the Pats. The Saints are not the same team on the road as they are at home, but I’m sure they’ll give the Patriots all they can handle on Sunday afternoon.
Jets (3-2 overall, 1-1 division)
The Jets pulled off a big surprise on Monday Night, knocking off the Falcons (1-4). The Falcons are a very talented team, but made a number of mistakes that cost them in that game. As much as it pains me, I have to say that the Jets defense looks legit. Their young QB, Geno Smith isn’t lighting the world on fire, but he’s making enough plays to keep the Jets in games. He’s letting their defense do the rest. This week, the Jets welcome in the Steelers (0-4) off of their bye week. Let’s hope Mike Tomlin read the boys the riot act and has them ready to play.
