Dolphins lose 2 candidates to keep Philbin & end up with a Hickey

By Bill (@PhinNation on Twitter, PhinNation on Facebook)

Ring the bells, get the parade floats ready, the Miami Dolphins have a new General Manager!  His name is Dennis Hickey, a name which I’m sure will end up with a number of different memes if he doesn’t bring in the talent the Dolphins need.  Can you imagine?  Dennis the Menace?  Doo-Hickey?  The possibilities are endless.  The Dolphins swung and missed on a number of different candidates including 2 of their final 4, according to Armando Salguero.

That’s right, according to the Miami Herald, the Dolphins spoke with 2 of their finalists about becoming their new GM…..but 2 of the 4 candidates wanted the power to remove coach Joe Philbin.  Nick Caserio wanted to clean house immediately (that sounds familiar) and Lake Dawson wanted the power to fire Philbin after the 2014 season if he felt it was necessary.   Stephen Ross and his boatloads of loyalty, declined both requests saying that only he will have the power to decide if Joe Philbin should be retained.

Dolphins GM search begins to take shape

The Miami Dolphins have begun their search for a new General Manager.  As soon as the position opened up, speculation reigned and I’m pretty sure about 5,683 candidates were rumored to be on the Dolphins radar.  That list of candidates is beginning to take shape, as we learned on Thursday, exactly what the Dolphins new GM will be responsible for.

Stephen Ross indicated on Thursday that Carl Petterson, his close friend, will help advise Ross during the GM search.  He also confirmed that the new GM would have authority over the final 53 man roster and would report directly to Ross himself (not Coach Philbin or Dawn Aponte).   This GM will obviously need to work closely with Coach Philbin because their vision for a player that fits the scheme must match….unlike the last 2 seasons when there was a disconnect between Philbin and Ireland.

Big decisions ahead for Stephen Ross, Dolphins

By Miami Jules (@Miami_Jules on Twitter)

Jeff Ireland is gone, so is offensive coordinator Mike Sherman and ahead, bright blue skies and ticket sales. OK, maybe higher ticket sales but there’s a lot of uncertainty going around, at least in the world of arm chair analysts on the Internet, but sports media reporters and insiders  don’t seem to know any better either. Rumors and tweets from media insiders with reliable sources claiming Jeff Ireland was safe, were being spread around like the Swine Flu right up to the moment in which the Jeff Ireland news broke bringing into question the accuracy of any and all reports and rumors.

We now have the last remaining pockets of resistance from Jeff Ireland loyalists, who are emphatically claiming the Ireland departure was in part or mostly due to a Machiavellian plan concocted by VP of Football Administration Dawn Aponte, in order to oust the often embattled and misunderstood Ireland. There are also rumors, perhaps even unconfirmed reports about  Joe Philbin who has long been on Stephen Ross’ good side, enjoying a huge amount of authority and vetoing power within the Dolphins organization. Here’s the thing, whether these rumors or reports are true or not, if the perception exists around the league  that Joe Philbin’s power is such, the search for a new GM will probably yield less than desired results.

Latest news on Dolphins GM and Offensive Coordinator searches

The Miami Dolphins fired both their offensive coordinator and general manager earlier this week.  Since then, there have been a lot of people guessing as to who the Dolphins would bring in to fill both of those roles.  It’s often difficult to figure out exactly what is the truth and what is speculation.  So exactly who do the Dolphins have in mind for both of these positions?

Actually, before we get into who the candidates are, let’s first think about what their responsibilities will be.  The Offensive Coordinator is a much simpler answer.  He’ll likely run the offense, with some influence from Joe Philbin, a former offensive coordinator himself.  I would guess the offense would be similar to the one that the Dolphins ran last year.  The new GM is a different story.  Will he report to Joe Philbin and Dawn Aponte?  Or will he have the power to fire one (or both) of them and report directly to Stephen Ross?  We simply don’t know the answer to that question, which makes determining which candidate is most likely, all the more difficult.

Tom Gamble is the frontrunner for Dolphins GM position, while other names surface

On Tuesday evening, news broke that the Dolphins were finally moving on from their General Manager of 6 years.  By late Tuesday night, speculation was already rampant about who the Dolphins new GM would be.  According to Jason Cole of National Football Post, the man that Stephen Ross would like to replace Jeff Ireland, is Tom Gamble.  Gamble is currently the Eagles VP of Player Personnel, but has little control over talent acquisition, serving under Chip Kelly and Howie Roseman.

Gamble is an interesting choice, one which I would be happy about.  He has been a part of 11 playoff teams (5 with the Colts, 4 with the Eagles, and 2 with the 49ers).  Gamble has served in both college and pro scouting and is known to have an eye for talent….something the Dolphins can certainly use!   Gamble joined the Eagles this past offseason and has strong ties with the organization since he started his NFL career there before pursuing other opportunities.  It is also believed that Gamble took the Eagles job to relocate closer to family.  He may be the man Stephen Ross wants, but it might take some persuading to get him to Miami.
